special character in comments field throws exception

trying to enter greek characters into comments-formfield like 'αMHC-MerCreMer' throws following exception when saving: PDOException: SQLSTATE[22007]: Invalid datetime format: 1366 Incorrect string value: '\xCE\xB1MHC ...' for column 'comments'...
